Figure Drawing Pose 11

Life Study of Chessa & James by LindaLisa

On this Friday night, we were so lucky to have TWO models for our figure drawing group! Chessa and James came in to be models at the BRANSON FIGURE DRAWING - MONTHLY MEETUP session. They are a couple and this was the first time they have done this for artists. After showing Chessa and James my sketches from last months session with Steffanie (Here), they had a good idea of the poses they can work with! We all seemed to find that having two models to work with in the short time frames, was very challenging! This was demanding to each artist in the room. At first, wanting to get all the information from each pose onto the paper, was a little stressful for me. After the first few 5 min sketches, I realized the need to focus on what the models are actually doing rather than trying to portray their detailed appearance. Trying to create a sense of movement with the poses they used.

"With gesture drawing, you want to convey the essence of the pause. There are various approaches for doing this. One such method is to focus on a “line of action.” A line of action is basically an imaginary line following along the spine or the curve of the arm. Once you have the line of action drawn, you can fill in the three major masses of the body: head, torso and pelvis. Starting with a line of action really helps to visualize the body as lines, shapes and volumes."

I'm very happy with this session and the two great models. Our meet up had more artists show up than my first time last month. It was great having a packed room and PIZZA for everyone! My partner Daniel, was able to make it to this drawing session and we were so excited! It was amazing experience for us.

Daniel will be posting his blog here about his first experience with figure drawing. He will share his figure drawings too!!

My Sketches I start with a line of motion, and then plot out the legs and arms. When drawing the head, I make an oval with a horizontal contour line where the eye line is and a vertical one for the nose. Working quickly helps me capture the motion. Not to worried making the drawings anatomically perfect, but capturing the motion and fluidity.

Below are some of my gesture drawings of our models. These are the warmup poses that lasted 5 minutes each or less. I tend to think first and foremost in line. Linework is one of my passions in art!. Figure drawing studies are great chance to try out new approaches and push your limits of comfort zones. I tried to take advantage of the longer poses to try and focus on some value, shadow shapes, and edges.

More Figure & Gesture Studies! These are the other sketches and gestures I did from Friday night. Each drawing/pose has a time limit. A few 5-minute studies to warm-up. Then the10-minute poses. At the end, two 20/30-minute figure studies.
